Design Reuse is a tool to simplify the work required to copy design data between projects and thereby reuse design work. Design data copied is re-generated and adapted to the design context of the target project. Copying design data follows an export-import scenario with an intermediate storage in a Transfer Set.

The information copied and stored in a Transfer Set is not binary data but definitions of data. At export, data definitions are extracted from design data and put in Transfer Set. At import, design data is re-generated by data definitions stored in Transfer Set. Along with data definitions, Transfer Sets contains information to maintain design data references and perform name adjustments as according to target project.
A Transfer Item represents an entity handled by Design Reuse. A Transfer Item can be a Model object or a Drawing.
The data definition format is specified by each type of Transfer Item and some types of Transfer Items can use more than one type of format. Typical formats are .sch (hull scheme), .dtl (datal), .xml, .sdb, .til
