Damage Scenario Dialog - Compartment Damage Tab.

The main body of the dialog is made up of a grid containing 12 columns. The first 2 columns (ID and Comp Name) display the ID and compartment name of all the compartments. Note that on scrolling to the right, to access the rest of the columns, the ID column is always displayed. The third column (Type) indicates the state of each of the compartments, which can be altered by selecting one of the options available from the drop down list.

  • Intact

  • To Outside Waterline (OWL)

  • Pressurized

  • Partly flooded

  • Water on deck

Various parameters from the next 7 columns (Wt and Param 1 to Param 6) will become accessible (allowing further data to be entered) depending upon the damage type required. The meaning of the parameter columns depends upon the damage type selected. Major Tasks gives a more detailed description.

Intact

The compartment is considered to be intact, i.e. not damaged. No further data required.

To OWL (Outside Waterline)

The compartment will be flooded with sea water to the level of the outside waterline. No further data required.

Pressurized

The compartment will be considered to be internally pressurized with air. Any deadweight will remain within the compartment. The required inputs are:

S.G.

The density of the fluid entering the compartment. Units of tonnes/m3 or tons/ft3.

Param  1

The longitudinal position of the hole in the compartment. Measured from the origin, and parallel to the baseline. Units of meters or feet.

Param  2

The transverse position of the hole in the compartment. Measured from the centreline, positive to starboard, and parallel to the baseline. Units of meters or feet.

Param  3

The vertical position of the hole in the compartment. Measured from the baseline, positive upward and normal to the baseline. Units of meters or feet.

Param  4

The gauge pressure of the air in the compartment (after flooding has occurred). Units of Tonnes/m2 or Tons/ft2.

Partly Flooded

The compartment will be considered as damaged and flooded with a specified weight of sea water, that means, partially flooded. The required input is:

Wt

The weight of sea water in the compartment after flooding. Units of tonnes or tons.

Water on Deck

The compartment is considered for "water on deck" calculations. No further data required. Any deadweight will remain within the compartment. Refer to Deterministic Stability for further information.

Drop out

Drop out is valid for damage to the outside waterline and partly flooded compartments, and implies that any contents present in the intact condition, will fall (or drop) out when the compartment is damaged.

Stage Flooding

Stage flooding is valid for damage to the outside waterline and partly flooded compartments.

The purpose of the stage flooding option is to simulate the progressive, sequential flooding of one or more compartments. you specifies the number of intermediate stages, and the percentage flooding for each stage for the flooded compartment. The number of stages and default percentages, are set up on the Other Data page.

The program will first carry out a damaged calculation with all compartments flooded to the outside waterline, to determine the 100% flooded state of the compartments.

Then damaged calculations for each stage, with the specified amount in each stage flooded compartment, will be done.

Note:
If you specify 100% in all stage flooded compartments, for a particular stage, this is not the same as the fully flooded state. This is because, for a stage, the amount of flood water remains constant throughout the heeling range, whereas for the fully flooded state, water is free to enter and leave the damaged compartment, as the vessel heels. Thus the GZ curves will not be the same.

Also there is no specified time associated with the stages and their rates of flooding, so it can not be regarded as a true time simulation.

Up to 5 stages can be specified, in the relevant sequence, by selecting according by the relevant option from the Type column. When the number of stages has been specified, the appropriate number of Param cells, will become active. you should enter the percentage full for each stage in these cells.

Calc will produce a condition report for each specified stage plus the fully flooded state.
