Tank Plan - Compartment Categories

Calc uses categories to group compartments according to their operational function. These are used in the Compartment Loading dialog as a method of Filtering the compartments according to their function and also as a method of grouping compartments in loading calculation and deterministic reports.

For each category, an ID (limited to 3 characters) and Name (limited to 40 characters) are required. you must provide an ID for each compartment, however the compartment name can be omitted if required, (although not doing so will make the subsequent report difficult to read).

There is also a column for default cargo type, and also default damage permeability. The default cargo type can be used to attach a default cargo type to a compartment when it is assigned to that particular category. The default damage permeability works in the same way. The default cargo type drop down box is populated from the Content Types tab sheet.

A special category, called Mainhull, is reserved and is used to denote compartments that form part of the hull buoyancy envelope. If the type of a Mainhull compartment is Buoyant, then the compartment provides positive buoyancy, otherwise, if Internal is specified then the compartment is free to fill with sea water.

Note:
Wrongly designating the main hull compartment as Internal, is a frequent cause of a negative value for the displacement being calculated.
