This method is based on a statistical analysis of experiments with 191 models, see References 1 and 2. Accuracy is claimed to be satisfactory for preliminary design work for 95% off the cases as long as the range of hull parameters is within those shown below:

Important:
Holtrop & Mennen can be applied outside these ranges, but it is important to note that the results may not be particularly accurate. This method can be applied for normal displacement vessels.

The model scale bare hull resistance is calculated using formulae given in References 1 and 2, with the total resistance being subdivided as follows:
