If data points are enabled for patch fitting (see Building the Surface - Data Points Page of the Patch Options Dialog) and the (None) smoothing function option selected, a patch's internal shape is defined entirely by the shape of the inactive curves that pass through the segments of the active curves that define the patch's boundaries.

For this to work correctly, there must be an adequately dense set of data curves passing through the bounding curve segments. If this is not the case, patches may take on strange shapes, illustrated in Figure 3:130 below.

Note that in order to be recognized, these data curves must intersect with the bounding curve segments. If the data curves are unfair, this may also cause irregularities in the surface.
