Remedy

The solution is to find which corner of the three-sided patch the degeneracy is best located at. This is done by trial and error.

Find the degeneracy

Using the Patch Options dialog, ensure the three-sided patch is selected in the Patch ID box.

Select Rotate then Apply to move the degenerate edge to another corner, then examine the effect on fairness (see Figure 3:132 below).
