Seakeeping - General

  • Last UpdatedDec 18, 2025
  • 3 minute read

This property page is used to set up general information, applicable to all of the seakeeping calculations, such as axes conventions and frequency and heading ranges.

Title

The title of the Hydrostatics Node may be changed via this property page.

Conventions

Axes

The axes convention enables the station numbering to be re-defined, by assigning new station numbers to the AP and FP.

Three alternatives are available:

  • AP = 0 and FP = 10 (default)

  • AP = 20 and FP = 0

  • AP = 21 and FP = 1

Head Waves

The heading convention sets the convention for the wave direction. The default is for a head wave to be defined as 180 degrees.

Calculations

By default, the short term calculations are made over seven wave headings, starting at zero degrees and incrementing at 30 degree intervals. The regular wave responses (RAO's) are calculated at 26 frequencies from 0.3 rad/sec to 1.3 rad/sec.

Both the frequency range and the heading range may be changed subject to a maximum of 51 frequencies and 19 headings.

Alternatively, you may request to input values in terms of wavelength, rather than frequency, where the relationship between wavelength and frequency is given by:

The following data may be entered:

Frequency

Frequency values will be required (see below).

Wave length

Values of must be input.

Min Frequency

(or min Wavelength/LPP)

Minimum frequency (or ) in the range (required for RAO calculations).

Max Frequency

(or max Wavelength/LPP)

Maximum frequency (or ) in the range (required for RAO calculations).

Frequency Increment

(or Wavelength/LPP Increment)

Frequency (or ) increment. in the range (required for RAO calculations).

Note:
A maximum of 51 frequencies is available, so if the increment supplied is too low, it will be altered accordingly.

Min Heading

Minimum heading at which RAO’s / RMS values are calculated.

Max Heading

Maximum heading at which RAO’s / RMS values are calculated.

Heading Increment

Heading increment.

Note:
A maximum of 19 headings are available, so if the increment supplied is too low, it will be altered accordingly.

Default

Default values, as mentioned above, may be restored by clicking on the Defaults button.
