Manoeuvring Data Dialog - General Tab

Title

The node title may be modified via this tab sheet.

Ship Type

Two different mathematical models have been developed for Merchant and Naval vessels (see Manoeuvring Module). You should choose the vessel type here.

Note:
Shallow water corrections are only available for Merchant vessels. Also, the rudder type chosen on the Appendages dialogs (Rudders tab) is only applicable to Naval vessels, with Merchant vessels assuming a conventional rudder.

Loading Condition

All of the manoeuvring calculations require various hydrostatic data as input to the regression formulae.

A loading condition previously defined within Hydrostatics may be selected, thus using the hydrostatic properties of the vessel, as calculated by Hydrostatics. Alternatively, you may enter any draught, and indeed any hydrostatic properties. However, the facility to automatically calculate the hydrostatics from the vessel, at any draught, has been implemented.

The grid control has been designed so that information can be copied and pasted with ease

The following is a brief description of each item in the grid control:

Condition

By default, a User Defined condition is created, that is, it is independent of the Loading Conditions previously set up in Hydrostatics. However, each loading condition is included in the drop-down list, allowing you to easily perform manoeuvring calculations on predefined loading conditions. Note that if a defined loading condition is selected, then you may not change the Name, Draughts or fields calculated automatically.

Automatic Update

Checking this button will automatically update certain fields by calculating the properties from the hull definition. The following values are calculated:

  • CB

  • CM

This item is only available for a User Defined condition, and if it is checked, and you change either the Draft Aft of Draft Fwd, then values are again automatically updated on the fly.

Note:
You may not alter the above values when this box is checked. You may however, check the box to obtain calculated values, then uncheck the box to alter either of the calculated values.

Name

Condition Name

Draft Aft

The draught at the aft perpendicular.

Note:
This value is only editable for a User Defined loading condition.

Draft Fwd

The draught at the forward perpendicular.

Note:
Again, this value is only editable for a User Defined loading condition

Mean Draft

The draught at midships. Not editable.

Trim

Trim by the bow (Tf-Ta). Not editable.

Include Bulb

The manoeuvring calculations use either a modified Holtrop & Mennen or Series60 formulation for calculating the vessel resistance. They make certain assumptions about the size of a bulb, therefore you are only requested to state whether or not a bulb exists. Check this box if a bulb does exist.

CB

Block coefficient =

CM

Midship area coefficient

GM

Fluid Metacentric height.

LCG

Longitudinal center of gravity from the Aft Perpendicular.

VCG

Vertical center of gravity (from the keel).

Rudder to load waterline

Distance of the rudder to the load waterline.
