If tanging is enabled when building a surface (check Use Tange Targets on the Tangency page of Patch Options dialog), the system attempts to improve the smoothness across patch boundaries by aligning the control points that are adjacent to those defining the shared edge between of a pair of neighboring patches. In many cases this helps to improve the overall fairness of the surface, but in some cases it can make it worse. A typical symptom is smooth ridges running along patch boundaries.
