Hull and Outfitting

Projects

There are two options when starting a new project in Calc - either create a new project from the beginning, using a geometry data store, or open an existing Calc data store from a previous version of Calc.

Geometry Datastore

Calc can utilize several alternative definitions and file formats for compartment geometry, as listed in the following table:

Data Type

Typical input files

Facetted data

Facet (FCT) file

Portion data

GDS file

Section data

Britfair (BRI) file

Calibration data

LoadMate Fluidtnk file

All data types

Initial Design Geometry XML file

The Initial Design Geometry file conforms to the international XML standard and is the preferred method of transferring geometry and other fixed data between Initial Design modules. This file can store all the supported types of compartment data, together with other data, such as openings, deck edge points, compartment categories,

Creating a new project

Before creating a new project you must have prepared a geometry file containing the definitions of the main hull and compartments as described above, preferably using AVEVA Initial Design Geometry Surface/Compartment and a Geometry XML file.

To start a new project, select FILE/NEW, or click the equivalent toolbar button. This will invoke the New Project dialog.

This will ask you for the Project Name, Project file (the Calc file), the Geometry file (Geometry XML file is the default), and which Template, if any, you wish to use.

The Template function allows you to use a previously defined configuration or calculations for the new project. Typically this will have been set up in a previous project.

The program sets up default data (such as range of drafts) for calculations, however you are advised to check the data before running calculations.

Opening an existing project

To open an existing project, that means, a .calc or .cdf file, select FILE \ OPEN from the menu, or click the relevant toolbar button, and select the file from the File Open dialog box.

When the program reads a Release 4 CDF file, it will display a warning, saying that a particular section is missing. This is the Calculation Tree, that did not exist in Release 4. In this situation, the program will create a default tree, with default data. However, existing data will be used where appropriate.
