A balance must be sought between minimizing the number of patches and control points, and producing a surface that is sufficiently close to the underlying curves. This is aided by achieving a distribution of patches that reflects the shape of the surface implied by the underlying curves - see the advice given in Poorly selected patch boundary curves.

Once the user is satisfied that this has been achieved, rebuild the surface using different numbers of control points (Patch size box, General page of Patch Options dialog) to find the minimum number that gives adequate fidelity between the surface and the underlying curves.
