Checking the Use data points box means that the shapes of the inactive curves guide the internal shapes of patches. This is done by sampling a set of point data from the regions of inactive curves that lie within a patch's boundaries. The patch geometry is then calculated so that it approximates this data.

The Sections, Waterlines and Buttocks checkboxes allow the user to specify which of these curve types data is sampled from. The Sampling density box specifies approximately how may data points are sampled from each inactive curve region.
