A three-sided patch is formed from a four-sided patch that has one edge made degenerate - that means, all of the control points are coincident to form a single corner. The behavior of the patch shape in the region of the degenerate edge is different from that near the other corners of the patch. In particular, it is often more difficult to achieve a fair transition into neighboring patches.
