Seakeeping Dialog - RAO Output Tab

  • Last UpdatedDec 18, 2025
  • 6 minute read

Various calculations are performed during a seakeeping run. Firstly the Added Mass and Damping Coefficients are calculated in a regular seaway for each wave frequency, heading and ship speed. The wave excitation forces are then calculated and the coupled equations of motion solved to produce the vessel RAO's and, if requested, the added resistance and dynamic loads.

By default, only the vessel RAO's are given as tabular output, since the tables are large and there is therefore a lot of output, and no graphs are displayed. However, you can choose to display any or all of the above calculations in tabular and/or graphical format. Both Cartesian graphs and contour plots may be displayed:

Tabular Output

By checking the appropriate box(es) the following tabular output is produced:

Added Mass

The forward speed (total) added mass coefficients

Damping

The forward speed (total) damping coefficients (not including non-linear roll damping coefficients).

Vertical RAO's

Surge, Heave and Pitch - Amplitudes and phase leads.

Lateral RAO's

Sway, Roll and Yaw - Amplitudes and phase leads.

Vertical Forces

Surge force, Heave force and Pitch moment - Amplitudes and phases.

Lateral Forces

Sway force, Roll moment and Yaw moment - Amplitudes and phases.

Added Resistance

Added resistance in waves.

Dynamic Loads

Vertical shear force and bending moment; Horizontal shear force and bending moment and torsional moment - Amplitudes and phase leads.

Tabulate against wavelength/LPP

By default, tabular output is given against wave frequency. Check this box to tabulate values against .

Added Mass and Damping Graphs

Cartesian graphs of any/all of the added mass and damping coefficients can be included in the reports:

Coefficient

The coefficients that can be plotted are:

A22, A24, A26, A33, A35, A42, A44, A46, A53, A55, A62, A64, A66

B22, B24, B26, B33, B35, B42, B44, B46, B53, B55, B62, B64, B66

X-Axis

The graphs can be displayed against wave frequency or wave length.

Speed

Each graph contains the hydrodynamic coefficient for a single speed. Select the required speed from the drop-down list

Alternatively, the first item on the list is "zero-speed", which will plot the coefficient, but without the inclusion of speed correction terms.

Since the zero-speed terms are independent of heading angle, only a single graph is plotted and the heading cell is ignored.

Headings

Each graph can include any/all of the wave headings defined on the Dynamic Positioning Data - General Tab page. Select any/all from the drop-down check list.

You may add and delete graphs as necessary and may change the order of the graphs in the report by using the Up and Down buttons.

Add

Adds a single graph to the grid (and hence report)

Delete

The Delete button is enabled when you select a number of rows from the grid control (by clicking on the numbers in the left-hand column). Highlighted rows are then deleted by clicking on the button

Up

The Up button is enabled when you select a number of rows from the grid control (by clicking on the numbers in the left-hand column). Highlighted rows are then moved up the grid by clicking on the button.

Note:
If the first row is selected, then the button is not enabled, since the rows cannot be moved.

This is useful for re-ordering the graphs that appear in the report.

Down

The Down button is enabled when you select a number of rows from the grid control (by clicking on the numbers in the left-hand column). Highlighted rows are then moved down the grid by clicking on the button.

Note:
If the last row is selected, then the button is not enabled, since the rows cannot be moved.

This is useful for re-ordering the graphs that appear in the report.

RAO Graphs

Cartesian graphs of the six degrees of freedom motions and wave excitation forces can be included in the reports:

RAO

Cartesian graphs of the six motions and six wave exciting forces/moments can be added to the report. Choose one from the drop-down list

X-Axis

The graphs can be displayed against wave frequency or wave length.

Speed

Each graph contains the RAO's/Forces for a single speed. Select the required speed from the drop-down list

RAO Contours

Contour plots of the six degrees of freedom motions can be included in the reports:

RAO

Contour plots of the six motions can be added to the report. Choose one from the drop-down list.

X-Axis

The contours are draw with the heading as the Y-axis. The X-Axis can be displayed against wave frequency or wave length.

Speed

Each contour contains the RAO's for a single speed. Select the required speed from the drop-down list.

Criteria / Minimum

Minimum criteria for contour plot.

Criteria / Step

Increment for contour plot.

Criteria / Maximum

Maximum criteria for contour plot.

You may add and delete contours as necessary and may change the order of the contours in the report by using the Up and Down buttons.

Add

Adds a single contour to the grid (and hence report)

This is useful for re-ordering the contours that appear in the report.

Down

The Down button is enabled when you select a number of rows from the grid control (by clicking on the numbers in the left-hand column). Highlighted rows are then moved down the grid by clicking on the button.

Note:
If the last row is selected, then the button is not enabled, since the rows cannot be moved.

This is useful for re-ordering the contours that appear in the report.
